Discussions on the development of renewable energy facilities in the territory of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, namely, the possibilities of increasing the renewable energy capacities at the Burshtynska TPP Island took place in Lviv on 16 August 2018 in the premises of the Western power system company of the NEC “Ukrenergo”. The event was held with the participation of the representatives of the Fuel and Energy Complex and Energy Saving Department of Lviv Regional State Administration, the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, PJSC “Zakarpattyaoblenergo”, JSC “Prykarpattyaoblenergo”, PJSC “Lvivoblenergo” and companies that implement renewable energy projects in the Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
At the opening of the meeting, Michail Gret, deputy director of the Fuel and Energy Complex and Energy Saving Department of Lviv Regional State Administration made a statement in which he stressed the importance of mountainous areas development: “Strategy for the Development of the Mountainous Territories of the Lviv Region for 2018-2020 has been already developed and launched. Renewable energy is its important component.”
The participants were briefed on the current status of the Burshtynska TPP Island and the key issues related to increasing the RES capacities in the region.
Oleksii Brekht, Deputy CEO - Chief Operational Officer of the NEC “Ukrenergo”, presented highlights of Ukrenergo's work aimed at further development of renewable energy in the region. Several key issues were also highlighted, including: the operation of power system considering forecasting the wind and solar power generations, the introduction of power reserve / balancing capacities and interconnection of the Ukrainian energy system to the Continental Europe power system, including Burshtynska TPP Island. An increase in electricity export to the EC and in own electricity consumption in the western regions of Ukraine will also create additional opportunities for the renewable energy capacities growth.
Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA's Board, Vice President of the WWEA proposed within the second stage of the Ukrainian-Danish Energy Center Project to develop tools and techniques for short-term forecasting of wind and solar electricity generations.
According to Michail Gret “an agreement has already been reached on cooperation between the Fuel and Energy Complex Department of Lviv Regional State Administration and the State Enterprise “NEC “Ukrenergo” on commissioning the Drogobych substation 330 kV and developing proposals for changes in the current legislation aimed at simplifying the procedure for the renewable energy development”.
1.Burshtyn TES is a coal-fired power plant of Zakhidenergo located in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. From 1 July 2002, the power plant and several substations connected to it have been disconnected from the IPS power system of Ukraine. The plant, with these substations, and customers served by the plant/substations together called "Burshtyn Island". The island is synchronized and connected to the UCTE grid via the power systems of Hungary and Slovakia. The purpose of the island is to accelerate the integration of the Ukrainian IPS into the ENTSO-E Continental Europe region.
2. Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Ihor Nasalyk and Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Ukraine Ruben Madsen signed an agreement on further cooperation in the development and activities of the Ukrainian-Danish Energy Center (UDEC) in February 2018.
