Before russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the resulting changes in the structure of the Unified Energy System, balancing of renewable generation in Ukraine was provided mainly by thermal power plants. This situation was referred to as the \u201cgreen-coal paradox.\u201d At the same time, the consequences of the large-scale war have prioritised the development of decentralised and renewable energy sources, which has, in turn, increased the need to address the issue of their system balancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1022\" height=\"455\" src=\"https:\/\/uwea.com.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/znimok-ekrana-2026-06-19-o-11.22.55.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwea.com.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/znimok-ekrana-2026-06-19-o-11.22.55.png 1022w, https:\/\/uwea.com.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/znimok-ekrana-2026-06-19-o-11.22.55-300x134.png 300w, https:\/\/uwea.com.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/znimok-ekrana-2026-06-19-o-11.22.55-768x342.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">Nowadays, two main methods of balancing renewable energy generation are known worldwide, both of which are relevant for Ukraine\u2019s development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>through flexible <em>(dispatchable)<\/em> generation capacities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>through \u201cgreen\u201d hybrid power plants<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">Hybrid power plants are facilities that combine more than one type of electricity generation into a single integrated system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">According to research by the international engineering company AECOM, the combined or synchronous operation of multiple renewable energy sources can reduce capital expenditures by 3-13% and operating costs by 3-16%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">By integrating different types of generation such as solar power plants <em>(SPP)<\/em>, wind power plants<em> (WPP)<\/em>, and energy storage systems <em>(ESS)<\/em>, hybrid power plants make it possible to compensate for fluctuations<em> (\u201cdips\u201d)<\/em> in the output of one generation source with another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">As a rule, energy storage systems are an essential component of such plants, as they increase overall reliability and, when needed, provide ancillary services to the power system, such as voltage regulation, balancing, and other stability functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">Hybrid power plants are flexible in scale and can be built to supply electricity for small, medium, or large enterprises, as well as for regional or national power grids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">The development of the \u201cgreen\u201d hybrid power plant segment is strategically important for Ukraine\u2019s energy system due to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ensuring the predictability and stability of renewable energy generation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increasing the flexibility and stability of the power system;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reducing imbalance volumes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>decreasing the number of system outages;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensuring continuous power supply to electrolyzers in green hydrogen production;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improving project quality and economic efficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-text-align-justify\">UWEA closely cooperates with the relevant state authorities to create a legislative framework for the development of such a market segment as \u201cgreen\u201d hybrid power plants.
