UWEA and WWEA Continue to Strengthen Energy Resilience: 30 kW Solar Power System Launched at “Chervona Kalyna” Kindergarten in Irpin

As part of the Renewables4Ukraine initiative, launched by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) jointly with the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA), a 30 kW autonomous solar power plant was officially inaugurated at the Chervona Kalyna kindergarten in the Irpin community on August 28, 2025. This milestone marks another step in strengthening the energy independence of Ukraine’s social infrastructure during wartime.

Project Scope:

  • 35 kW of solar panels installed on the kindergarten rooftop;
  • two 15 kW hybrid inverters (30 kW total capacity);
  • a 45 kWh battery storage system.

According to the company “Green System”, the solar station can generate around 6,000 kWh of electricity in summer months, ensuring uninterrupted power supply even during blackouts. Beyond resilience, the system significantly reduces costs for electricity and diesel fuel previously consumed by backup generators. “We used to run a diesel generator. Now we can save both electricity and diesel fuel, as solar panels cover our needs,” said Hanna Shamalo, Deputy Director for Operations at Chervona Kalyna kindergarten.

The Ukrainian and World Wind Energy Associations are long-standing and reliable friends of the Irpin community. Such gifts as solar power plants are critically important for our medical and educational institutions,” emphasized Oleksandr Pashchynskyi, Deputy of the Irpin City Council.

Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board: “At the UWEA, we strongly believe that energy independence is a matter of security, especially for educational institutions during wartime. The solar power station at Chervona Kalyna kindergarten is not only an environmental upgrade but also a powerful symbol of resilience. Projects like this prove that renewable energy serves society — in times of peace and in times of crisis alike.”

Stefan Gsänger, Secretary General of WWEA: “The commissioning of the solar power station at Chervona Kalyna kindergarten is another shining testimony of international solidarity between the people of Ukraine and the global renewable energy community. May these children grow up feeling the power of the sun and the strength of friendship that unites us across borders. I thank everyone who contributed to making this project a reality.”

Through the Renewables4Ukraine program, in partnership with the international community, the UWEA and the WWEA are actively deploying renewable energy technologies in critical social facilities — schools, hospitals, and kindergartens — to ensure their energy autonomy even under crisis conditions. A significant contribution comes from international partners, including the Finnish organization EcoLabel and German communities, which channel revenues from their own wind farms to support Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Wind Energy Association extends sincere gratitude to all partners who made this project possible. We especially thank the company “Green System” for the professional technical implementation, our international allies for supporting the Renewables4Ukraine initiative, and the local community and leadership of Chervona Kalyna kindergarten for their cooperation and openness to renewable technologies. It is through such collective efforts that we are building Ukraine’s energy-independent future.
