Professional, Qualified Personnel – the Foundation of the Sustainable Development of Wind Energy

On 20 June 2025, the Chervonohrad Vocational Mining and Construction Lyceum hosted an event to mark International Wind Day. The event took place within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in March 2025 between the Chervonohrad Vocational Mining and Construction Lyceum and UWEA, the aim of which is to popularise renewable energy, in particular wind energy, as well as to facilitate the training of specialists in this field.

The participants of the event discussed the prospects of the labour market amid the decentralisation and decarbonisation of Ukraine’s energy sector and emphasised the growing demand for new professions needed to ensure a sustainable energy transformation. Special attention was paid to adapting curricula to the needs of business and to modern technological challenges.

UWEA was represented at the event by Yurii Fedak, Deputy Director for Development of LLC “Eco-Optima”, and Taras Bereziuk, Director of Intertechservice Group – both companies are members of UWEA.

Among the participants were also representatives of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, the Lviv and Volyn Regional Military Administrations, the Ladyzhyn community (Vinnytsia region), the Sheptytskyi City Council, the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy of Germany, GIZ, the Association of Coal Communities of Ukraine and the Institute of Power Engineering and Control Systems of the Lviv Polytechnic National University.

The Educational and Practical Centre for Renewable Energy, opened on the basis of the lyceum, was equipped with the support of the German Society for International Cooperation, GIZ Ukraine, within the framework of the coal-region transformation project. It is pleasing to note the genuine interest of the lyceum’s students in obtaining professions in the field of renewable energy, especially wind energy. Many of them regard this direction as the prospect of their professional future.

Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board:

“The transition from a centralised power system to a decentralised one, from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, requires a rethinking of approaches and target benchmarks for vocational education. Ukraine critically needs qualified specialists in the field of wind energy and other renewables technologies. I am confident that the partnership between UWEA and vocational education institutions will become an important factor in the accelerated development of wind energy – one of the key directions of the green and resilient reconstruction of Ukraine.”

Elementum Energy and CEMARK Have Concluded a One-Year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement Fixing the Electricity Price

UWEA is pleased to announce the conclusion of a new contract between two of the association’s member companies – Elementum Energy and CEMARK – aimed at stabilising electricity prices. On 1 June 2025, a one-year corporate power purchase agreement (cPPA) entered into force between the Dnistrovska wind farm (managed by Elementum Energy) and one of the cement plants of the CEMARK group.

The concluded agreement is based on the CfD mechanism (Contract for Difference), under which the parties agreed on a “price corridor” — a range within which market fluctuations do not trigger additional settlements between the producer and the consumer. If the upper limit is exceeded, the producer compensates the consumer for the difference, and if the price falls below the corridor, the consumer compensates the producer for the difference.

Settlements are based on the indicative price benchmark defined in the agreement and an agreed volume of electricity. At the same time, no physical delivery of electricity takes place, and all transactions are carried out on the open market.

Instruments for stabilising electricity prices in Ukraine are not yet very popular, but their introduction is critically important for long-term business planning. CfD contracts, also known as financial corporate PPAs, have good potential, as they provide protection against price fluctuations and create predictable conditions for producers and consumers. In addition, such pilot projects allow end consumers and renewables producers to work directly in the light of European integration changes and with care for the environment”, — comments the Commercial Director of Elementum Energy, Roman Volosheniuk.

Given the large volumes of consumption and market prices, electricity costs are one of the key components in the cost of cement and require constant attention and the introduction of new instruments for influencing price formation. ‘As of yesterday’, this was the permanent benchmarking of offers on the electricity supply market in order to maintain commercial prices on the best market terms, and the development and introduction of atypical commercial products, such as, for example, a fixed-price package.

‘Today’, this toolkit is being supplemented by the CfD and PPA mechanisms, which, in addition to the tasks of hedging price risks, are important components of the development of renewable energy in Ukraine. ‘Tomorrow’ we have a plan to introduce our own electricity generation instruments: both ‘green’ and balancing”, — comments CEMARK’s energy resources procurement manager, Maryna Boiaryntseva.

This is already the second such contract for Elementum Energy, and it is another important step in the development of financial instruments that contribute to long-term stability and transparency in the renewables sector. CfD mechanisms, which are already widely used in the EU, are only beginning to be integrated into the Ukrainian market and have significant potential to support both producers and large consumers of “green” energy.

UWEA sincerely congratulates both companies on the signing of this important agreement. This is an example of practical interaction between renewable energy producers and a responsible industrial consumer that corresponds to modern challenges and European approaches to sustainable development. UWEA will continue to support instruments that contribute to the development of a competitive and transparent energy market in Ukraine.

Another Kindergarten Has Become Energy-Independent Thanks to Renewable Energy

On 3 June 2025, UWEA Board Chairman Andriy Konechenkov took part in the opening of an off-grid solar power plant installed on the grounds of the “Ivasyk-Telesyk” preschool education institution in the village of Kozyntsi, Irpin territorial community.

The capacity of the installed photovoltaic system is 16.5 kW. From now on, the facility is provided with an uninterrupted electricity supply, which will make it possible to maintain the educational process even in the event of emergency or scheduled outages. In addition, the introduction of the solar power plant will help to reduce the community budget’s spending on utilities.

The project was implemented within the framework of the international #Renewables4Ukraine initiative, launched by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) and the global platform Global100RE in partnership with the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, with the financial support of the shareholders of the “Windpark Druiberg” wind farm, located in the German town of Dardesheim.

WWEA Secretary General Stefan Gsanger emphasised:

We are glad to once again support Ukrainian children by installing an off-grid renewable energy system on the roof of a kindergarten, this time in Kozyntsi. The wind farm of the German community in Dardesheim demonstrates a high level of practical solidarity with Ukrainian children who have suffered from Russian attacks. Thank you to all our partners who made this possible: the donors, as well as our Ukrainian partners!

This is already the eighth social infrastructure facility of the Irpin community where an off-grid solar power plant has been installed within the framework of the initiative. Earlier, similar systems were implemented in the “Dzhereltse”, “Pinocchio” and “Kazka” kindergartens, the Irpin Lyceum of Innovative Technologies, as well as three family medicine outpatient clinics.

“Today, the issue of energy security at the local level is becoming especially relevant. The introduction of off-grid systems at social infrastructure facilities is not only about an uninterrupted supply, but also about sustainability, economic efficiency and a demonstration of the potential of renewable energy for post-war recovery”, — noted Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board.

UWEA expresses its gratitude to all the partners and donors for their consistent support of the development of sustainable energy in Ukraine and for contributing to increasing the energy independence of communities in times of war.
