The grand opening ceremony of WindEnergy Hamburg 2026 – the world’s leading international exhibition for onshore and offshore wind energy – has officially taken place in Hamburg. This year, the exhibition brings together over 43,000 participants from more than 100 countries, reaffirming Hamburg’s standing as a pivotal global wind energy hub.
The city’s decisive role in shaping Europe’s energy landscape was underscored by Hamburg’s First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, who noted that approximately two-thirds of Germany’s wind energy potential is managed directly from Hamburg.
Today, Hamburg serves as the meeting ground for technology, business, and policy-making driving the future of the energy sector. As the global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy accelerates, the tangible impact of these shifts is becoming increasingly prominent. Notably, global offshore wind capacity reached a historic milestone this year, surpassing 100 GW of total installed capacity.
At the same time, the energy transition remains one of the defining challenges of our time. To address this, WindEnergy Hamburg has expanded its scope this year with a dedicated pavilion for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – technologies that will play an indispensable role in future energy systems.
Energy security also featured prominently in the discussions. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Beatrice Yordi, Director for Energy Security and International Relations at the European Commission, emphasized:
“Today, Europe is becoming increasingly independent of fossil fuels, with Russia’s war against Ukraine acting as a catalyst for this process. Security of supply and geopolitical imperatives have come to the fore. In green energy, we must stand united – there is no place for division. Furthermore, electrification will be the cornerstone of Europe’s energy resilience. Together with our partners, we are committed to making Europe the world’s first fully electrified continent.”
The modern energy transition extends far beyond decarbonization and technological innovation. It is fundamentally an issue of energy independence, resilience, and security. Wind energy remains a cornerstone of this shift, the success of which hinges on long-term policy predictability, international cooperation, and concerted action across Europe.
